Ferne Delores Hendershot is the grandmother of Kristy McCumby-Hyland.

"My grandmother worked part time in the cannery when they lived in Stanwood, then she was a "stay at home" mother when my mom and sister were young. 1962 my grandmother went back to work as a salesperson in several clothing department stores in Everett, and worked until my grandfather retired."

"My grandmother, Ferne Delores Hendershot Frazier came to live near me in her later years here in Las Vegas. She had Lewy Body dementia and could not care for herself and she wouldn't live with either my mom and dad or my aunt Judy and her husband. She was in an assisted living facility in Everett for a while, but hated it and it was extremely expensive. So, I was able to talk her into coming to live by me and I was able to find an assisted living facility close to my house. She moved to here in March 2013. I was blessed to be able to visit with her most every day and make sure she was well-cared for. She passed away here in Henderson, NV under hospice care (which is a town next to Las Vegas where her assisted living facility was located) and her remains/coffin were flown back to Everett, Washington to be interred in the crypt/mausoleum that my grandparents had purchased there many years before. She is with my grandfather, Clive Verner Frazier who preceded her in death in 2001 at the Cypress Lawn Cemetery. I figured she took care of me for the first four years of my life, so the least I could do was help care for her the last years of her life."

"When my grandparents were married, it was the middle of the Great Depression. This was the time when so many people left Minnesota and North Dakota and other mid-western states for the coastal areas of the US (California, Oregon, and Washington) as there were much better job opportunities for them out west, and the climate was not so extreme. Both my grandparents' families arrived in Stanwood in the 1929-1931 time period. My grandfather's parents came from Missouri. There were more jobs available for the men working in the lumber mills or in the food canneries, Stanwood is about 30 miles north of Everett, WA and about 80 miles north of Seattle, WA. There was a lot of access to hunting and fishing in Puget Sound there."
