Elsabeth Kirstine immigrated into the US in 1876. Her mother passed away when Elsabeth was only 6 years old, and her father had reached the age of 60. She arrived in Minnesota, USA, in 1876, according to the the US census of 1920.
She married Nis Peterson (1849-1911) in 1876, according to the 1900 US census. State marriage records show the date as June 13, 1876. In the 1880 census she lived with her husband and first child in Blooming Prairie, Steele Co., Minnesota.
She continued to live in Blooming Prairie on a farm with her husband until he died in 1911. In the 1920 census, she lived in Aurora, Steel Co., Minnesota with her daughter. She died May 23, 1924 in Bixby, Steele Co., Minnesota and is buried in the Brorson Church Cemetery.
She and Nis had six children: 1. Soren N. Peterson 6.11.1877-15.12.1940. 2. Thomas Nis Peterson 20.6.1880-25.10.1929. 3. Carolina 21.10.1883-28.9.1960. 4. Christian (Chris) Peterson 26.9.1885-?. 5. Niels (Nels) Peterson 12.2.1887-8.1.1915. 6. Agnes Christine Marie 27.4.1892-26.6.1959.
Elsabeth Kirstine Mainz' niece, Christina Mainz (baptized Kristine Kristensen Mainz) immigrated into Minnesota 1881/1882:
"It seems possible that Christina could have stayed with her aunt Elsabeth and her husband when she arrived from Denmark. The town of Blooming Prairie is south of Minneapolis, where a lot of the immigrants first arrived by train."
Elsabeth Peterson (Mrs. Nis Peterson) obituary from Bixby, Minnesota, 30 May 1924
Bixby was saddened last Friday noon thru the death of Mrs. Nis Peterson, 73, a pioneer resident of the community. For the last 18 months, Mrs. Peterson suffered with pernicious anemia and during the last four weeks gradually grew worse and was confined to her be until she passed away last Friday morning at eleven o'clock. Mrs. Peterson was an estimable woman, loved by all who knew her and was of a true Christian character.
The deceased was born in Hylds, Denmark on March 1, 1851. She came to this country in 1876 and on June 13, 1877, was united in marriage to Nis Peterson. They made their home on a farm in Blooming Prairie township, until Mr. Peterson's death which occurred November 25, 1911, since which time Mrs. Peterson has resided here. Six children were born to them, of whom four are living: Soren N of Blooming Prairie, Thomas N, on the old homestead six miles west of Blooming Prairie, Mrs. John O. Jerdet of Lansing, and Miss Agnes Peterson, who made her home with her mother. Chris N. died November 4, 1912, and Nels N. died January 8, 1916. Mrs. Peterson was a member of the Brorson Lutheran church and its ladies aid society.
The funeral was conducted by Rev. A. Nielsen of Geneva Monday and the remains were laid to rest in the Brorson church cemetery. The esteem in which Mrs. Peterson was held was shown in the many floral offerings and large number that attended the funeral.
