"Funeral services for John Hoist, 74, who died Saturday in the University hospital, Iowa City, following an extended illness, were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Buchner Chapel. The Rev. C. Edward Holyoke of the Evangelican and Reformed Church in Maquoketa, officiated. Burial was made in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Johannes Petersen Hoist, son of Andrew and Anna Maria Lund Hoist, was born January 13, 1872, at Sjoelund, Denmark. When 17 years old he came to America on a vessel which was shipwrecked. He eventually made his way to an uncle in Delmar.
In 1903 he was united in marriage to Mre. Matta Stutting. To this union were born four children.
He farmed near Delmar for a number of years, and in 1916 he came to make his home in Maquoketa.
Here he operated a truck and had a berry garden as long as his health permitted.
He is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Irene Bellar, Mrs. Anna Thompson, Mrs. Lena Cash, all of Long Beach, California, a son Andrew Hoist of Seal Beach, California, a stepson Ernie Hoist of Maquoketa, a brother Matt Hoist of Nashville, a sister Mrs. Christina Georgia Lowe of Janesville, Wis., and nine grandchildren".
