May 27, 1918 - August 9, 2014 - It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Johanne (Joan) Elizabeth Sorensen at the age of 96 years. She was born in Lunderskov, Denmark and immigrated to Canada with her parents in 1928. She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband Lars, and brother Andrew Straarup. She will be dearly missed by her four sons, Larry (Sherry) from Calgary, Allen (Diana) from Cochrane, Kenneth (Beverley) from Australia, and Murray (Ingrid) from Acme, Alberta, seven grandchildren, one step grandson, eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews in Denmark and Calgary. After taking a business course at Henderson College, she worked for Number 11 Equipment Depot in Calgary in the accounting office. In 1945 she married Lars and they would enjoy sixty-five wonderful years together. In 1952, they moved to a farm at Acme and this would be their community until 2005. Joan will be remembered as a very caring and kind person. She loved her flower garden, loved to bake, to knit and to play bridge. Most of all, she loved her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the Acme United Church for over 50 years, a life member of the U.C.W, a past district president of the Prairie Rose Rebekah Lodge in Acme, and a member of the Acme Seniors. In 2005, she along with Lars, rmoved to the Edgemont Retirement Residence in Calgary. We wish to thank the Edgemont for all their kindness and care and to all her friends she made while living there. Memorial Services were held Friday, August 15, 2014 at Acme United Church, Acme, AB. Memorial donations may be made to Acme United Church. Condolences may be sent to condolences@sunsetltd.ca."
